PRELIMINARY JUDGING GUIDELINES

So that all of our contestants and our judges will be on the same page, we have created this page to include our judges instructions and criteria for the All-American Natural Beauty pop-up and preliminary pageants.

A Note To Our Judges:

First and foremost, we would like to sincerely thank you for sharing your time and talent with All-American Natural Beauty! We have wonderful young ladies and gentleman of all ages competing in the weekend's popup and/or preliminary competition.

I'm sure you understand that your score sheet is your personal testimony and it is our desire that your scores reflect the best representative of the All-American Natural Beauty program. is Our organization takes positives from beauty pageants such as poise and personality along with those from model searches such as talent and determination to find the next great talent in film, media and print!

We value and expect positive representation in public appearances; a role model for the community. It's our goal that our royalty become a public servant, advocate on local, state and country-wide issues to make this world a better place for everyone in it.

We believe that age-appropriate natural beauty is top priority. All of our contestants are cherished and guided to make a difference in today's society. There is no discrimination and everyone is included no matter their challenges. We are not solely a beauty nor a popularity contest; we want our girls and boys to be the best they can be as themselves.

About Our Judges:

All of our judges are volunteers.

Our judging panel is, we believe, the perfect balance. Each judge is familiar with the pageant and acting/modeling world in some form or fashion. 95% of the time, they will be from outside the local area of the pageant location. We will have two experienced judges and one inexperienced so that we are always training he next generation of judges as well as including that ever-changing trend-setting appeal for our model search.

We never want a judge to feel "rushed" or "pressured" in any way whatsoever! To that end, you will have a "head judge" that will have several responsibilities:

1. The Head Judge will control the tempo of the pageant. By giving the emcee a signal she will let her know when she is ready for the next contestant to come on stage. We do not want the judges to still be completing score sheets for the previous contestant while the next one is make his/her stage appearance! So, until all judges have completed their score cards and passed them face down on the table, we do not want the next contestant on stage.

2. It is the Head Judge's responsibility to collect all three score sheets on each contestant. Make sure the division and contestant number are correct. Then, staple them together and place them face down in front of him/her.

3. All our popups/preliminaries are tabulated by computer. The Head Judge may be called upon to check to make sure that the tabularo has entered the numbers for each contestant correctly. However, so that we can complete the pageant in a timely manner, someone else may be available to do this for the head judge and save some time.

Please make sure that you enter the contestants number correctly and circle her correct division (Baby-Mrs) before you pass your score sheet to your head judge!

If you leaves comments, please make sure that they are professional and positive notes to help and build up each contestant such as "dress too long" or "great smile". Do not be demeaning or discriminatory.

If you make a mistake, please destroy the sheet and get another one. We have plenty of score sheets and plenty of time.

All judges should be decisive, impartial and consistent!

We strive to keep our preliminary procedures as simple as possible. Each judge's score sheet has a place for you to put the contestants division and number. You then have the option of giving each contestant a score in the 1-10 range. A score of 10 (excellent) should only be reserved for those contestants who deserve an "outstanding or perfect" score.

You will be scoring each contestant in three areas during the Competition:

1. Stage Presence (Beauty - Individual)

How does he/she perform on stage? Is he/she comfortable and confident? Is he/she smiling or making eye contact? For ages 5 and up, does she have poise?

2. Overall Appearance (Beauty - Individual)

Simply, how does he/she look? Remember, we are a semi-glitz program and want every contestant to be confident but also age-appropriate. Children under age 4 are not allowed to wear makeup of any kind. Age 5-12 years should be light makeup; aged 13 & up may wear full makeup. Does their outfit fit correctly and look good? Contestants are encouraged to show their sense of style! We do ask for our contestants to wear formal wear; dresses for girls and tux/suits for boys. If they have sparkles, feathers, etc. then it's fine as long as it looks good on them. The price of the outfits do not matter at all. Wigs/wiglets or flippers (fake teeth) are discouraged but not deducted unless it is completely noticeable. We prefer natural beauty but if you can tell it's fake then score accordingly; and please leave a note to let parents know that you can tell so that it can be resolved for other pageants. We do not allow spray tans on ages 0-12 years old, so please deduct accordingly. Also, while we are not a glitz program, we do honor modesty. Outfits should not show the midrift area at all in any age division. Too much cleavage is discouraged as well as too much thigh. These things can negatively affect your score!

3. Personality (Beauty - Individual)

Does he/she sparkle on state? Does their personality come through loud and clear? While we understand that babies will cry and toddlers will lose focus, please be fair in judging accordingly compared to those that are happy go lucky and "professional" on stage.

4. Optionals (Beauty - Individual & Group)

Each optional will be judged by a score of 1-10 in each: Best Attire, Best Personality, Best Smile, Best Hair, and Best Eyes.

5. Photogenic (End of Beauty)

The Most Photogenic award is completely subjective and based on one's personal opinion and considering that we are looking for a model that evokes confidence, energy, emotion, mass appeal, and natural beauty. However, you also need to have somewhat of a photographer's eye for lighting and a sense of comfortability in front of the camera. A great photo happens when you fell comfortable in the moment and the photographer captures at the perfect time. It's a combination of composition, background, lighting, and timing. A contestant's hair, makeup, wardrobe, and accessories must all harmonize with each other to create a feeling in you

What to do if you arrive and find out that you "know" one of the contestants:

Let the director know immediately. If the relationship is just an "acquaintance" type of relationship then most likely you will be allowed to judge that division. As long as you feel that you can be "fair and impartial".

If the relationship is a close one, then most likely you will be asked to just sit out that division. We can usually do just fine with two (2) judges. Or we may substitute another judge in your place if one is available.

But please, let us know as it's much easier to deal with a problem if we have all the facts upfront.

Rules that judges need to be aware of:

Baby and Tiny contestants MUST have a parent or guardian on stage with them at all times!

Standing behind the judges table coaching your child is not acceptable. Please note that we do not consider parents or family/friends waving or smiling at a baby to be coaching. Just don't stand directly behind the judges to do it. COACHING is using hand gestures and body motions to get your child to do specific movements and routines on stage.

As a semi-glitz pageant, we do not deduct against wigs/wiglets, fake tans or flippers (fake teeth) unless it is highly noticeable. We prefer natural beauty.

We do not allow fake tans on children ages 0 to 12 years old, period.

Hair & Makeup should be age-appropriate. 0-4 years no makeup is allowed; 5-12 years light makeup.

Modesty is key. Outfits should not show the midrift area at all in any age division. Too much cleavage is discouraged as well as too much thigh. These things can negatively affect your score!
